What to look for when choosing a t-shirt…So, you’re looking for a t-shirt? Yes.
A cotton t-shirt? Yes.
Know which one to go for? No idea.
I’m guessing that you got the same answers? Not to worry because I’m going to let you in on a few tips on how to choose the t-shirt that is right for you.
Well, first thing to consider is how heavy do you want it to be? It’s really down to what you're wearing them for.
If you just want a standard, normal fabric weight then you are looking for a 140/150gsm. REMEMBER – The higher the gsm the heavier the garment!
All Fire Label's t-shirts have the fabric weight and content details
Heavy weight garments start at about 175/180gsm and can go up to 210gsm+! Luckily, if you are looking for a heavy weight t-shirt, it generally gives an indication in the product name.
If you are looking at getting them screen printed don’t go for anything too light as sometimes the ink doesn't take well.
You also need to check the style and fit of the garment. So, basically if you don’t want a slim fit garment, don’t go for one!
Always check the size guides though because between brands chest to fit sizes can differ making a standard fit garment more tapered compared to another brand.
Prime Example –SOL’s is a European Brand and therefore a European fit so does come naturally slimmer than other brands like Gildan.
The most important aspect to check when looking at t-shirts is the fabric content.
I know that sounds a bit stupid when the first thing you think of is, ‘ermm but they’re cotton’ but hear me out!
Have you ever noticed that some t-shirts are softer than others? Nicer quality? Wondered what the difference is? Why are they like that? How are they better than 100% cotton when they are cotton too?
Well to tell you in the easiest way possible, the fabric is made differently.
Firstly you have cotton, this is spun into a yarn and woven into fabric to make the components for a t-shirt.

You then have ringspun cotton, where the fibres are twisted more tightly resulting in the yarn being stronger and softer.
There is also combed/semi-combed cotton. This is where the impurities in the cotton have been combed out before being spun making the fabric softer to touch.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with standard 100% cotton, but if you want a softer feel and a more durable garment in comparison then go for the ringspun or combed cotton, or both!!! Some are 100% ringspun combed cotton. Now that's a double whammy!!
I hope this has helped make you think what you need to consider when buying your t-shirts.
My last piece of advice… don’t go for Fruit of the Loom Screen Starts unless you only want them to last 1 wash! Great for a promotional garment but I would never recommend it otherwise.
